Make Up a Story
Stories from Around the World

It’s a man named Sam Longshoot. There’s nothing expressive about the guy. He’s a long-time rancher with a wife and two kids. And even though the ground he’s standing on is damp, he’s in a dry riverbed in the American Southwest. He’s got donkeys and a water trough. There might be another bronco there on the far left, as well.
His hat isn’t a helmet, so he’s not military. And he’s got a belt that’s modern American, so you know he’s not Mexican. Are those boots or tennis shoes? I can’t tell if there are spurs or not.
Everything’s old. That’s a military rifle – you can see the bolt, and the sight is up there by his thumb. But it might be an older type. The pail looks like it’s in good shape, still a little silver, so it’s been anodized. But the stakes that hold the trough are old. None of the wood is carved or smooth.
Sam is looking at the sky and shooting coyotes, or maybe small game. Otherwise, the coyotes might kill his calf.
Are those pinion trees? That would indicate no water. But next, rain will come – you can see the rain clouds. He’ll try to stay dry by following the path to the barn.
